Experimental Theoretical Researcher in Nano-Optomechatronical Instruments

What will you be doing?

The research group Opto-mechatronics focuses on the conceptual design of high-tech optomechatronics systems, in close cooperation with the research groups Optics, Space Systems Engineering, Nano-Instrumentation and Instrument Manufacturing. Large commercial projects are executed for customers in the domains of Space & Science instrumentation, Semiconductor Equipment and the Manufacturing Industry.

The role of the group within the strong global position of the Dutch mechatronics industry is that of supplier of breakthrough technology. Core areas for the group for the coming years are robust adaptive optomechatronics modules and control systems; industrial instrumentation for in-line inspection and control, and nano-optomechatronical instruments for applications in next-generation lithography, metrology and medical diagnostics. The group has a close collaboration with several universities and research institutes, a large network in industry and contributes to the Topsector roadmap Mechatronics.
The position entails research, development and experimentation on nano-optomechanical instruments (NOMI) and equipment (for example: https://www.tno.nl/en/about-tno/news/2015/2/parallel-scanning-probe-microscope-beats-single-scanning-1000-fold/). NOMI is a type of instrument that is based on opto-mechanics interactions with matter at the nanoscale. Examples are scanning probe microscopy, near-field instruments and high resolution optical meta-materials instruments (Meta-Instruments).

Together with your colleagues you will analyze customer needs, translate these to system requirements, create conceptual designs and build experimental setups to demonstrate key aspects, and realize and experimentally characterize full instrument prototypes; both as TNO-owned technology demonstrators and as prototypes for high-profile international customers.

What do we require of you?

You have a PhD in mechanical engineering, mechatronics, electrical engineering or applied physics and preferably several years additional working experience.

Your experience clearly shows a mastery of the combination of at least mechanics and physics. Knowledge of how to build a nanoinstrument such as AFM, SPM; knowledge of micro- and nano-characterization and design, including materials and microfabrication technology, is advantageous.

You have a proven scientific track record through publications in relevant journals.

In addition to your theoretical background, you have experience in the design and realization of test setups, and in the design and execution of complex experiments.
 

You have a pioneering mentality, and you are comfortable with the uncertainty  that comes with scientific and engineering challenges. With your good communication skills, energy, creativity and a boundless curiosity, you can convince and inspire colleagues and customers alike.
